Oxford And Cambridge Share Vintage 2021 Generations Event And 2021 Varsity Match Results

Published on by Oxford & Cambridge Sailing Society3 min read

Cambridge 80s triumphed over Cambridge Current 2 in the 2021 Generations Event, with Cambridge retaining the Yule Oldham Varsity Trophy and Oxford the O&CSS Ladies Varsity Salver - at a vintage Generations / 2021 Varsity Match held at Farmoor on Saturday 2nd October. The Varsity match was rescheduled from Royal Harwich in July because of COVID-19.

The day was overcast and rainy, but expected gales did not arrive and the programme ran like clockwork under the expert management of Ben Rahemtulla and Kathryn Twemlow, along with their team of helpers - including Richard Thompson and Nigel Vick as Varsity Match umpires. A big thank-you to everyone involved, and to Oxford SC for making their facilities available. Their new extended and improved café was greatly appreciated.

A full round robin was run for the 8 alumni and 4 student teams involved, with sudden death semis and final being run for the Generations Event. The Varsity Matches were run on a 'best of 7' basis, with Oxford Women winning inside the distance 4-2 but Oxford holding Cambridge to a nail-biting 4-3 win in the very light conditions at the end of the day.

The evening saw an excellent and very convivial dinner at St Anne's College, with students continuing the fun at The Bridges nightclub afterwards. The dinner included the presentation of the CUCrC Barograph to Anthony Butler as a mark of appreciation of all that he has done for Cambridge sailing over the past 10 years, and for his establishment and running of the O&CSS website.
